Botox

  • More and more people are turning to Cosmetic Doctors for rejuvenation techniques, to help their space reflect the way feel inside. One such rejuvenation techniques is BOTOX treatment. It can be used to relax the specific facial muscles that cause upper facial lines (crow's feet, forehead and glabellar frown lines) to form.

How and why do wrinkles form?

Many facial wrinkles occur when we use our muscles to form facial expression. The wrinkles formed during these expressions are called dynamic wrinkles. For example, when we smile our eye wrinkles become prominent and when we frown the vertical lines between eyebrows become noticeable.
  • What is BOTOX treatment?

BOTOX is a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkles causing muscles, creating rejuvenated appearance. BOTOX is simple procedure that relaxes select facial muscles to smoothen out lines and wrinkles on our face. No anti-aging cream comes close to skin smoothen effect of BOTOX. Botox used for the treatment crow's feet (the lines that radiate from the corner of your eye when you smile or squint) , forehead lines (the horizontal lines that form when you raise your eyebrows), glabellar frown lines (the vertical lines that appear between your eyebrows frown) and Bunny lines (The lines formed on the nose that pronounced when you scrunch).
  • How does BOTOX treatment work?

BOTOX can be used to relax specific facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles (these are the wrinkles that are formed during facial expression). Once the muscles are relaxed, you can not contract them and continue to make the undesirable facial expression. Thus the lines gradually smooth and new lines are prevented from forming.
  • What does BOTOX treatment involve?

BOTOX treatment is a non-surgical procedure whereby a small amount of BOTOX is administered into selected facial muscle by a trained medical professional using a very fine needle. Generally BOTOX treatment takes around 15 minutes. Discomfort is typically minimal and brief, and no anaesthetic is usually required. The injection may string for a few second but normal activities can be resumed soon after. After the injection it take 4 days for BOTOX treatment to begin taking effect and about 7 days to see the full effect. The dose recommended for the treatment will vary depending on your individual situation and the severity of your lines. Your Doctor will know what the best is for you and which muscle to inject to give you the best results.
  • How long does BOTOX treatment last?

The effect can last up to 4 months before lines slowly begin to return, if you have repeat BOTOX treatment the effect tends to last longer if you choose not have further BOTOX treatment your muscles eventually return to normal activity and your wrinkles will gradually revert to their pretreatment levels.
  • Will facial expression be affected by BOTOX treatment?

BOTOX works specially on the muscles treated. These means that any muscles untreated, including on treated facial muscle should not affected by BOTOX treatment your Doctor will determine best dose for you and which muscles to inject to give you the best result.
  • Are there any side effects?

In addition to its use for cosmetic reasons, BOTOX treatment is also used to treat patient in a variety of therapeutic indications including cerebral palsy in children, movement disorders (head, neck, shoulder, face) and axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating). In the amounts used for the treatment of upper facial lines, the side effects are usually temporary localized to the area of injection. Possible side effects, including headaches, pain, burning/stinging, brushing, swelling or redness at the injection site, local muscle weakness including drooping eyelids/eyebrows, swollen eyelids, skin tightness, itching/aching forehead, nausea and flu-like symptoms.
  • Can Botox treatment be combined with other products and procedures?

Many people use a combined of cosmetic products and/or procedures with BOTOX. Your doctor will advise you as to whether or not you will receive results if your BOTOX treatment is combined with other products and/or procedures.

Melasma

  • Melasma also called 'chloasma', is a common skin condition of adults in which light to dark brown or greyish pigmentation develops, mainly on the face. Melasma usually becomes more noticeable in the summer and improves during the winter months.
It is not an infection, it is not contagious and it is not due to an allergy. Also, it is not cancerous and will not change into skin cancer.

    What causes melasma?

These include pregnancy, hormonal drugs such as the oral contraceptive pill, and medical conditions that affect hormone levels. Exposure to sunlight can worsen melasma.
  • Is melasma hereditary?

Melasma can run in families, suggesting an inherited tendency.
  • How does melasma look like?

Melasma appears as darker-than-normal skin affecting the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose and chin, usually in a symmetrical manner. It may be limited to the cheeks and nose or the skin of the jaw region. The neck and the forearms can also be affected.
  • How is melasma diagnosed?

Melasma is easily recognized by the characteristics of the pigmentation and its distribution on the face.
  • Can melasma be cured?

There are several treatment options which may improve the appearance. Superficial pigmentation is easier to treat than deep pigmentation.
  • How can melasma be treated?

Melasma treatments fall into the following categories, which can be used together. Skin-lightning agents
Chemical peels, dermabrasion and laser treatment.
Adopting appropriate sun avoidance measures and using sun-blocking creams.
Avoiding known trigger factors, such as the oral contraceptive pills or perfumed cosmetics.
  • Sun Protection

Skin affected by melasma darkens more than the surrounding skin with exposure to sunlight, so sun-avoidance and sun-protection are important. Broad-spectrum fragrance-free sunscreens, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30+ should be applied daily throughout the year.
  • Skin lightning creams

Certain chemicals can reduce the activity of pigment-forming cells in the skin.
  • Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can improve melasma by removing the cells of the epidermis which contain the excess pigment.
  • What can I do?

The most important thing you can do if you have melasma is to protect your skin from undue sunlight exposure. This involves skin lightning agents and sunscreens which protect against both UVA and UVB light, with a sun protection factor of at least 30+ wearing broad-brimmed hats, and avoiding direct exposure to sunlight.
